Results just came in apparently I had dengue.

So my family and I are coming off a very painful situation apparently similar to many in Trinidad and other parts of the Caribbean. We just went through the mystery virus/chikengunya/dengue?  We have not tested so we do not know what exactly we had.  All I know is I have never experienced anything like it before and I am posting this in case it helps other people. BTW it is a long read people. (short version get panadine,  white rum, a shower,  a fan and paw paw leaves)

So Tuesday while going around to my clients my ankle became swollen.  Strange, I thought, I do not remember twisting it.  Now I sleep walk so I thought I twisted it in my sleep.  Throughout the day it got worst.  Then my jaw started to hurt that night.  When I picked up my daughter she said her knees were  hurting her but she played football for longer than usual the day before so I thought it was her muscles from the workout. (I know I know it seems obvious now …)

Now it just so happened that the week before I had a chest infection so I was on antibiotics to clear it up. I then jump up at 1 am with fever and my jaw really hurting, I am terrified I should not have fever when on antibiotics.  I go into a private hospital where the doctor is concerned and checks for pneumonia, kidney function and does full blood work.  All tests come back negative.  Due to the “twisted ankle” which is really swelling joint pain and my knee which has began to hurt while I am there he is convinced that I am exhibiting either chikengunya, dengue or a virus that is going around.  By this time hubby calls to say that my daughter has awoken with fever as well and extreme joint pain.  Sigh.  I hobble home.

Wednesday during the day

My daughter and I dose up on panadol and sleep, and sleep, and sleep. We get up only to have a sandwich and go back to sleep. Then at four I  am distraught I cannot get my daughter’s fever down. Panadol, check, bathe in cool water go in front fan, check use wet rags on her after stripping her down, check.  The fever is not coming down.  Ok then, the last resort that people say not to do but for me it works in extreme cases.  White rum wipe down.  Finally the fever breaks.  Somehow I have managed to do this through my own fever and in joint pain.  Ok, so hubby is back.  Great, he has brought panadine.  I make my daughter take it even though she hates taking tablets.

I take panadine as well and we make it through the night getting up several times.

Thursday

Is it really only Thursday? It feels like a week has gone past. My eyes have now become bloodshot. The panadine has my daughter’s fever under control but apparently my fever just finds panadine very funny.  I realise I don’t look so well because my daughter keeps asking if I am ok.  Now I cannot get my fever down. I tell my daughter to call hubby and let him know my fever is not breaking.  I don’t tell her I feel like I might pass out but I can tell by her expression that I have looked better. Ah finally the fever breaks once I bathe and drink lime and water and sop myself with lime and water and white rum.  Listen I pulling out all the stops here.  I no longer feel like I am going to pass out. I call back hubby and tell him I am better.  I apparently fall asleep for three hours and my daughter then keeps checking my temperature in my sleep to make sure it remains under control.  I have no recollection of this, I was deeply asleep.

Go through the same thing again evening into the night with fever spiking.  Get it down again. Same process.

Can we have an angelic chorus please for my older sister; when she heard I was sick she sourced young paw paw leaves and my staff made sure I got the leaves.   Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone.  Thank you to you tube for showing me how to prepare it.  Man it is vile, it is awful,  but it works.  I don’t care if it was a placebo effect.  I don’t care if we were coming to the end of the cycle. All I know is after we took it we all felt human again.  We slept through the night and we woke up with no fever and reduced pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alleluia, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA.

It is now Friday. Is this really only the third day?  We are starting to walk normally again. There has been no fever for 12 hours and we only slept two hours today.

I still have no idea what virus we had but I hope this will help you recognize the symptoms and use some of the techniques that worked for us. Especially since that swollen ankle thing seemed totally random.

(**update did tests a few days later and tested positive for DENGUE**)

Good luck people!
